ABOUT THE SEMINAR!

MAKING YOUR POLICE OR FIRE ASSOCIATION POWERFUL

This block will:

  • identify other interest groups with community power and how to make these groups an ally;

  • look at the "power elite" and how they do business;

  • show how the association can fit into the community power structure; and

  • teach how the association can get its share of the financial pie at budget time.

We also have two sections on the "PFLI Power Rating", where you can determine the strengths and weaknesses of your association.

"The 10 Signs of a Dysfunctional Association and What to Do About It" segment will show labor leaders how to correct some of the more serious flaws that many groups have.

POLITICAL ACTION

In this block, you will learn:

  • how to create and/or effectively use an association Political Action Committee (PAC);

  • why, when, where and how to endorse candidates;

  • how and when to use political consultants;

  • how to get the most bang out of the association's political buck; and

  • how to get members to support a controversial endorsement; and how to combat membership backlash to endorsements.

COMMUNICATIONS, PUBLICATIONS AND
THE NEWS MEDIA

There will be material on how to boost the association's public image; how to produce an interesting and effective association publication; and how to successfully communicate with the community power structure. There will also be a block on developing a association-press relationship; constructing an understandable press release; conducting a top-notch press conference; using the media to develop a powerful image; and understanding the difference between types of media coverage.

CONFRONTATION AND CONFLICT ISSUES

We have an entire block set aside to discuss the latest police and fire labor-management conflicts from around the country. We will discuss contract settlements, referendums and other labor-management issues.

Attention will be paid in this block to defining:

  • the police or fire association message in a conflict;

  • the use of high-pressure tactics;

  • taking out a political enemy in a campaign; and

  • fighting tax rollbacks and other anti-union measures.

This block will also offer new insights on such issues as how to fight the employer's "re-inventing government" scheme; and how to use the "public-safety" theme for better benefits.
